Dismissal of the PM
Once again the military has destroyed any chance of the development of civilian bourgeois democracy in the country. The resignation of Mir Zafarullah Jamali is nothing but the forced resignation of the Prime Minister through various backdoor channels by the military. Chaudhry Shujaat and his lackeys have been maneuvering for quite sometime to gain full control over not only the Muslim League but also the seat of the Prime Minister. The motivation of the Shujaat group was nothing other than personal gain and at the expense of the tax paying people of this country. There is no real political difference at all between the Jamali faction and the Shujaat faction. Both were loyal stooges of the army. There was no difference over the LFO, the National Security Council, budget, foreign policy, defending the right of Musharraf to continue with his presidential and military powers and so on. It was purely gain gain and nothing but gain that explains this conflict.
But what explains Musharraf’s decision to get rid of Jamali? Is it any surprise that this military that has dismissed 18 out of 19 politicians (and the only one they could not dismiss owing to his vast popularity was hanged after a mock trial) would now get rid of the 20th. Some think that Communist or revolutionary politics in this country is banned. I beg to differ. All civilian politics in this country are banned. The only politics that are permissible are those of polishing the boots of the army. No tin pot military dictator could have asked for a more compliant and subservient stooge as Mir Zafrullah Khan Jamali. He never crossed, never challenged, and never even raised a question about Musharraf’s “leadership”. Yet, this loyalist of the loyal was given the royal boot in the most odious manner imaginable. Not only was he told to resign at a private party (one would assume that the least one could do is not ruin the evening) but he was further made to ridicule himself in a press conference by saying that he was simply not worthy of his post.
And now Mr. Shaukat Aziz is being hailed as the beacon of hope for the future of Pakistan. This neo-liberal does not even have a constituency let alone be elected to the post of Prime Minister by the majority of the people of Pakistan. But his best constituency is the General Musharraf himself. Since the general has said he will be the next Prime Minister that is what will be. No questions asked.
One really is left to wonder whether General Musharraf is mentally sick, deranged, or just plain stupid? The least he could have done is made some flimsy looking excuse to hoodwink the people into thinking that some semblance of a democratic process still exists in the country. It seems he is so intoxicated by his own power that he feels he can make any change and that the entire country will have to obey his every whim.
It won’t be long before the people of Pakistan rise up and claim what rightfully belongs to them.
